Pillsbury's red velvet cookie dough with OREO pieces is a refrigerated dough, new in January 2025, that bakes into twelve big cookies. This homemade version is a soft cocoa dough coloured red, with ten chopped OREO cookies folded in. It makes eighteen cookies, baked at 350°F for 10 to 12 minutes, and it is a dough for baking, not for eating raw.

The Pillsbury dough this is based on

Allrecipes reported on 8 January 2025 that Pillsbury and OREO had brought out a Red Velvet Oreo Ready-to-Bake Cookie Dough, a red velvet base with bits of OREO cookie, at retailers nationwide including Target and Walmart.

Pillsbury's product page lists a 14-ounce package that makes 12 big cookies, baked at 350°F for 15 to 20 minutes, at 150 calories a cookie. The ingredients are sugar, bleached flour, palm oil, OREO pieces and water, followed by cocoa, eggs, baking powder, salt, Red 40 and flavouring at 2 percent or less each.

This recipe follows that list with butter in place of the palm oil, and one of its eighteen cookies comes to about 160 calories by USDA figures. MakeFoodLovely is not connected with Pillsbury or OREO.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup softened unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon red gel food colouring
  • 10 OREO cookies (coarsely chopped)

Instructions

  1. Whisk the flour, the cocoa, the baking soda and the salt in a bowl.
  2. Beat the butter with both sugars for 2 minutes, until pale. Beat in the egg, the vanilla and the food colouring until the colour is even.
  3. Add the dry ingredients and mix on low speed just until combined. Fold in the chopped cookies by hand.
  4. Cover the dough and refrigerate it for 30 minutes. Heat the oven to 350°F and line two baking sheets with parchment.
  5. Scoop the dough in 2-tablespoon portions and set them 2 inches apart. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until the edges are set and the centres still look soft. Cool on the sheet for 5 minutes, then on a rack.

Is red velvet Oreo cookie dough safe to eat raw?

The packaged kind can be. Pillsbury says that it uses heat-treated flour and pasteurized eggs so that its refrigerated cookie dough can be eaten baked or raw, and marks those products with a seal.

A dough mixed at home has neither. The FDA calls flour a raw food, says never to eat or taste raw dough or batter, and advises against heat-treating flour at home, because home treatments may not kill all bacteria. This dough is for the oven.

Red, and still red after baking

Gel colouring gives a deep red with one teaspoon. Liquid colouring needs a tablespoon and thins the dough. Two tablespoons of cocoa are enough for the red velvet taste; with more cocoa the dough turns brown, and no amount of colouring brings the red back.

The cookies are done when the edges are set and the middle still looks underbaked. Baked until firm, they brown and lose the colour.

OREO pieces, not crumbs

Chop the cookies into pieces between the size of a pea and a hazelnut. Fine crumbs turn the dough grey. Fold the pieces in by hand at the end, because the mixer grinds them.

Other OREO recipes on this site are the Post Malone OREO cookies and the Subway OREO cookie.

Chilled, frozen, baked later

Thirty minutes in the refrigerator firm the butter, and the cookies spread less. The dough keeps 3 days in the refrigerator. Scooped portions freeze for 2 months and bake from frozen with 2 minutes added.

Broken into pieces, the baked cookies go into a homemade OREO McFlurry.
