**Selected for Doody’s Core Titles® 2024 in Nutrition** Ketogenic: The Science of Therapeutic Carbohydrate Restriction in Human Health presents the most up-to-date and evidence-based science and research available in the field of TCR, with the purpose of training medical and allied healthcare professionals on the effective therapeutic use of low-carbohydrate and ketogenic nutrition in clinical practice. This book explores the appropriate, safe, and effective use of TCR to improve patient outcomes in a broad range of chronic metabolic conditions and aims to promote health.
Focused on lifestyle management, health support and the treatment of diseases rooted in poor nutrition, this book explores the role of food and lifestyle modification as medicine and is a valuable resource for nutritionists, dietitians and medical professionals who provide diet-related counselling, as well as those researching or studying related areas.
Presents new best-practice guidelines for using TCR to treat, improve or reverse nutrition-related metabolic conditions and diseases that were previously thought to have a chronic, irreversible progression
Provides an overview of the most recent evidence outlining the biochemistry and physiology pertaining to human nutrition and health
Offers evolutionary and historical context to human nutrition
Contains clinical practice guidelines for the implementation of TCR from medical practitioners who prescribe TCR in their practices, allowing readers to understand real-life concerns in the field
Features case studies that provide practical examples of how to assess, monitor and intervene with patients that practitioners encounter in their practices
Explains the physiology and biochemistry of the normal and pathophysiological state for each condition and links these to the application of TCR
About the Author:
Dr Hoffmann completed his medical degree (MBBch) at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa and subsequent neurology specialization and boards, FCP(SA) Neurol) administered by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of South Africa. He completed a stroke fellowship at Columbia University New York, Presbyterian Medical Center, Neurological Institute of New York, with Dr J.P, Mohr and Dr R. Sacco as mentors. I am a scientist who is also a migraineur. My research is focused on migraine cause, prevention and treatment without the use of medicines. As a migraineur, my original discovery was helped by experimenting on myself.
While migraine is genetic, the direct cause of migraine is at the ionic level, associated with the disruption of electrolyte homeostasis. This is the result of genetic variances of just about all voltage dependent ionic channels (sodium, potassium, calcium, ATPase), collectively referred to as channelopathy. Such variances cause major shifts in how much sodium a migraine-brain uses. Nutrition, such as carbohydrates, greatly affect migraines. Migraineurs have a stronger than normal reactions to glucose, which removes sodium and water from the cells, thereby disrupting electrolyte homeostasis. Migraineurs also need to consume more salt because their brain is hyper-reactive as a result of multiple neuronal connections of their sensory neurons.
The book “Fighting the Migraine Epidemic: Complete Guide. How to treat & Prevent Migraines Without Medicines” is extended and is the 2nd edition of the extremely successful and very popular book: “Fighting the Migraine Epidemic: How to Treat and Prevent Migraines without Medicines, An insider’s view.” While the 1st edition was discontinued shortly after the 2nd extended edition was released, used copies are still sometimes available.
While the 1st edition book explained quite a bit about migraine, it was primarily about me and how I treated my migraines. When it was released, I opened up a Facebook migraine group (Migraine Sufferers Who Want to be Cured by the Stanton Migraine Protocol) that you can find here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/MigraineSufferers/ . From the 15000 migraineurs who came through the doors of this virtual group, many went back to full-time jobs, travel, have more kids, etc., once they learned how to become migraine-free. Migraineurs, when not in pain, are very active. Many are athletes, some hold very important jobs and others may have many children. All migraineurs are happy and full of life once they are pain and medicine free.
Over the many years of research, my knowledge increased exponentially and moved into other medical fields as well, such as genetics, biochemistry, pharmacology, endocrinology, and as of late: nutrition and its influence on our health–complete health for all and not just migraineurs. I have been interviewed by many, most of which can be found on YouTube. Below are some links to watch:
