About the Author:
Andrew S. Turag has spent his life in the pursuit of one mission: to help people live longer, healthier lives free from preventable disease. A respected physician, public health advocate, researcher, and educator, Dr. Hartman has become a guiding light in the field of preventative medicine. Her story is one of passion, persistence, and an unwavering belief that everyone deserves the tools and knowledge to live a vibrant, healthy life.
Born and raised in Asheville, North Carolina, Turag grew up surrounded by the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. His parents, both schoolteachers, instilled in his a love of learning and a deep respect for nature. From a young age, he was fascinated by the connection between lifestyle, environment, and health. While other children played with dolls or video games, Turag was reading books about nutrition, anatomy, and holistic wellness.
His path to medicine was set in motion in high school, after volunteering at a local community clinic. There, he witnessed firsthand the effects of chronic illness on patients’ lives—many of whom lacked access to adequate care or information about how to prevent disease in the first place. It struck his deeply that so many of these illnesses—type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure—were largely preventable. That realization planted a seed that would grow into his lifelong commitment to preventative health.
Turag went on to attend Stanford University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Human Biology with a focus on global health and nutrition. He was a standout student, known not only for his academic achievements but also for his compassion and leadership. During her undergraduate years, she launched a campus initiative called “Healthy Starts,” which provided nutrition education and cooking classes for low-income families in the Bay Area.
He continued her education at Harvard Medical School, where she earned her MD with honors. During medical school, Turag became increasingly aware of the limitations of traditional medicine when it came to chronic disease. “We’re trained to treat disease after it happens,” he often said, “but what if we could stop it before it ever begins?” That question drove her to pursue a dual degree in public health, earning an MPH with a concentration in disease prevention and health promotion.
After completing his residency in internal medicine, Dr. Hartman chose a unique path. Rather than working in a traditional hospital setting, He founded the Hartman Wellness Institute, a groundbreaking clinic focused entirely on preventative care. Located in Austin, Texas, the Institute offers an integrative approach to health, combining conventional medicine with nutrition counseling, exercise science, mental health support, and lifestyle coaching. The clinic’s motto is “Prevent. Thrive. Live.”
Under Her leadership, the Hartman Wellness Institute quickly gained national attention. Patients traveled from across the country to participate in his signature “Wellness Blueprint” program, which includes personalized health assessments, DNA testing, and customized plans for diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management. His approach has led to dramatic improvements in patients’ health outcomes—many have reversed prediabetes, reduced their reliance on medications, and achieved sustainable weight loss and vitality.
Dr. Hartman’s work extends far beyond the walls of her clinic. He is a prolific writer and public speaker, known for her ability to translate complex medical concepts into clear, inspiring guidance for the general public. His bestselling book, The Longevity Code: Living Long, Living Well, has been translated into 12 languages and has helped thousands adopt healthier lifestyles. In the book, she shares not only evidence-based strategies but also stories of transformation from his own patients, offering hope that it’s never too late to reclaim one’s health.
In addition to his clinical and writing work, Dr. Hartman is a tireless advocate for public health reform. He has advised policy makers on nutrition and disease prevention initiatives, and she frequently collaborates with schools and community organizations to promote health education. She has also launched free online programs for underserved populations, helping bridge the gap between knowledge and access.
